Tuxedo Glossary
Jacket Styles
Cutaway and Stroller: For formal daytime weddings (11 am to 4 pm), the groom wears the cutaway/morning coat, which tapers from the front waist button to a long, wide back tail. Accessories include a wing-collar shirt with an ascot and a coordinating vest. Attendants wear the stroller/walking coat, which is cut slightly longer than a suit jacket, and is worn with a lay-down collar shirt and a four-in-hand tie. Both jackets, in either black or gray, are worn with matching striped trousers.
Dinner Jacket: A white or ivory jacket with black formal trousers is an ideal option in spring and summer months (or year-round in warmer climates) for formal and semiformal evening weddings.
Tuxedo: A single- or double-breasted jacket with matching trousers for formal or semiformal evening weddings, tuxes come in a variety of fabrics. Accessories include a formal shirt with cuff links and studs, and a bow tie with a vest or cummerbund.
White Tie: This is the classic choice for the ultra-formal wedding. Traditionally black the tailcoat jacket is short in front with two long back tails. A white vest, matching bow tie and wing-collar shirt are also worn. Tailcoats can be worn for formal daytime or evening.
Lapels
Notch: A triangular indentation is cut where the lapel joins the collar.
Peak: A broad V-shaped lapel that points up and out just below the collar line.
Shawl: A smooth, rounded lapel.
Shirts
Laydown Collar: Similar to a man's standard shirt laydowns have pleats on each side of the center button strip and are available with or without French cuffs. This is todays most popular shirt style.
Wing Collar: Wing collars have triangular points at the front of the neckband and represent the most traditional look in Men’s formal shirts. Pleats are on each side of the center button strip and are available with or without French cuffs.
Accessories
Vests: Usually selected for color and or pattern, vests are worn with a coordinating necktie, cravat, ascot or bow tie. Some vests are available in backless models that are adjustable at the neck and waist while others have a fully covered back
Necktie or Four-in-hand Tie: A formal, long knotted necktie worn with a laydown or wing collar shirt. From solids and stripes to fancy patterns, your formalwear specialist has a wide assortment of formal neckties for all occasions. Formal neckties are usually pre-knotted so that everyone in the wedding party is properly coordinated.
Ascot: Like the formal necktie but with pleats just under the knot.
Cravat: A wide tie usually with a pleat in the center. The pleat is held in place with a piece of jewelry. Worn with a wing collar or laydown collar shirt the cravat adds a level of sophistication to the formal look.
Bow Tie: A short tie shaped like a bow that can be worn with a wing or laydown collar. Most bow ties adjust to fit all neck sizes and are available in a variety of widths, colors, and patterns to match the vest or cummerbund.
Pocket Square: A small pocket handkerchief tucked into the left breast pocket.
Cuff Links and Studs: Decorative jewelry used to close cuffs and button formal shirts.
Cummerbund: A pleated sash worn at the waist that covers the trousers waistband.
Suspenders: Two supporting bands worn over the shoulders to support the trousers.

Tuxedo Tips for the Perfectly Groomed Groom
Fit
To avoid mishaps on that special day, all of the men should try on their tuxedos (including studs and cufflinks) before leaving the formalwear specialist’s store. If any adjustments are required they can be done on the spot to ensure the best formalwear experience.
Jackets
Regardless of style, jackets should fit comfortably through the chest and shoulders. The jacket sleeve should end where your thumb meets your wrist and just about a 1/2" of shirt cuff should extend past the jacket sleeve.
Pants
The perfect length pant leg breaks slightly on top of the shoe and angles a bit downward in back. Some men like a small break and some men like a full break.
Shoes
Black formal socks and shoes should be worn with a black or dark-colored tuxedo. White socks and shoes should be worn with a white tuxedo. There are many shoe styles available from basic to contemporary models in lace up or slip on.
Accessories
Vests are the most popular accessory today and are available in dozens of colors and styles for any occasion. With so many choices in neckwear you can select formal neckties, ascots, bow ties or cravats. All are appropriate for any occasion. Usually they match or offer a contrast such as a stripe pattern to compliment the vest. For a more conservative or traditional look cummerbunds are also available.
Jewelry
Formal cuff links are always appropriate and if you select a bow tie for your neckwear then you will want to wear a set of studs to button up the front of your shirt with style. Usually the studs match the cuff links.
